TNS Latvia is the only company in Latvia that has started in 1999 and is going on with TV audience measurements using special technical equipment – TV meters and offers to its customers a standard service of distribution and analysis of this information.

The survey of Latvia TV channel audience is being done regularly throughout all the year and its aim is to get information on the Latvia TV channel audience and information on characteristic features of this audience; information on watching different TV channels in specific target groups, on the audience reached in advertising campaigns. Survey results are used by Latvia advertising industry as an official account unit.

Survey sample is a household panel representing the whole population of Latvia and respondents of this panel are at the age starting from 4.
The panel is made basing on the following sources that provide information on geographical division criteria, social demographic structure and technical provision of the TV households:

■ Establishment Survey data. The Establishment Survey is being made regularly starting from January, 1998 as a component of National Readership Survey . The total sample of the year consists of 5200 respondents

■ Information on population structure on the 1st of January of the current year provided by Latvia State Committee for Statistics, Department of Population Statistics  

■ According to quota worked out basing on the above mentioned sources household recruiting for TV meter panel takes place using the following methods:
                       CATI   (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews) telephone recruiting
                       Recruiting during the Establishment Survey

Sample stability is provided by regular control and analysis of changes in the household panel.

Meter system

For project implementation EUROMETER equipment is used that is made in cooperation of the best specialists of the branch in the USA and Finland. In comparison with TV meters of the previous generation EUROMETER has many important advantages, for example, possibility to register precisely the usage of satellite TV and teletext. Besides, there is no need to make changes in TV inner structure in order to connect the equipment.
To improve the survey quality TV meters of the new generation - MITRONMETER were implemented additionally in 2005.

Information summary and processing technology

Information summary and processing take place automatically. „POLAR” program set is used for process implementation and its functions consist of calling to TV meters, sending information to the central server, result evaluation process, generation of output files for customer software.

Information supply forms

Information on survey results is available in the following way:
■ Electronic databases for  specialized customer software. Data are available:
                        In audience level: next day
                        In program level: on day after tomorrow
                        In ad level: on day after tomorrow
Database with the fresh information is sent to the customers in the frame of the project. Customers are provided with the software for both reporting and planning. For reports – "PaloMARS", for planning – "Gallup ADC", for monthly reports – „Easy Facts”.

■ Monthly reports in the electronic form „Easy Facts”.
